Company Profile

Ecothea srl is an Italian company, whose activity focuses on the ecological and digital transition. In particular on work vehicles in the vehicle sector and agri-construction systems. The mission of Ecothea Srl is the design and development of electric and hybrid solutions and transmissions in order to reduce emissions generated by agricultural and, more generally, industrial vehicles.

With the skills acquired in this area, the company has recently also achieved certification as an ESCO company (Energy Service Companies), based on the technical standard UNI CEI 11352:2014, to offer services to its customers and partners regarding energy efficiency projects which aim to reduce consumption.

Founded in 2018, as the start-up, by Prof. Aurelio Somà, Full Professor of Machine Design at DIMEAS (Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering- Politecnico di Torino).

Ecothea’s core business consists in the design, development and production of innovative systems for the agri-construction sector in such a way as to reduce its environmental footprint and guarantee, at the same time, a high level of performance.

This activity allows the development of innovative electrified work vehicles (both hybrid and purely electric). In particular, the macro areas in which Ecothea and its team of engineers carry out their activities are:

  • Efficient and sustainable mobility: electrified powertrains, systems based on Li-ion batteries, development of tailor-made high-performance solutions.
  • Industry 4.0/Transition 5.0: development of systems for remote monitoring and diagnostics and energy certification of the energy transition
  • Autonomous Driving: development of innovative self-driving off-road vehicles.

The skills of the Ecothea team have allowed the company to quickly develop partnerships with some of the most important Italian companies in the agri-construction sector (Merlo Spa, Antonio Carraro Spa, Guaresi Spa, Supertino srl, ERO Gmbh).

Why Ecothea?

Recently in agricultural mechanization, together with the Construction sector, innovation is moving towards electrification and this transition is often presented as a step to be addressed in the broader process of decarbonization of the sector.

Ecothea, could be better defined as system integrator. The company has the objective of developing new systems based on hybrid-electric or fully electric powertrains capable of increasing the efficiency of vehicles and, therefore, progressively reducing emissions.

Electrification in agriculture and in work vehicles in general does not only refer to tractors, but to a large panorama of operating machines and equipment.

The activity is not limited to electrification alone, but more correctly to a mechatronic system design such as to allow a process of integration between the mechanical components and the electrical systems including the drive and control devices.

Design activities as System Integrator

Ecothea organizes its activities into the following macro-groups:

  • Efficient and sustainable mobility

Thanks to the study on batteries, mainly lithium ion, we want to ensure that the final system is able to guarantee the greatest possible autonomy while keeping the dimensions of the batteries themselves limited and reducing the environmental impact that these systems have due to their life cycle. For this last point we are also based on an LCA study aimed at guaranteeing total emissions for the life cycle.

  • Electric mobility

Design and engineering of the hybrid electric or full-electric powertrain to be implemented on the starting vehicle, guaranteeing a tailor-made solution for the individual vehicles and activities it must carry out. This allows you to optimize the functioning of the new vehicle, thus obtaining a greater reduction in consumption, with a consequent reduction in pollutants emitted into the atmosphere.

  • Transition 5.0

In parallel to the design process of the innovative vehicle, the installation of a diagnostic system capable of sensing and monitoring the vehicle during its operation is also planned. Vehicle diagnostics allows you, even remotely, to evaluate vehicle maintenance to always guarantee maximum efficiency. It is also possible to evaluate the use of the vehicle itself in order to identify possible solutions to further reduce fuel consumption. In this context, Ecothea, as an ESCO certified company, offers itself as a consultant for the evaluation of energy efficiency according to the Transition Plan 5.0.
