Life Athena – EU

Ecothea is among the partners of the LIFE research project of the European Commission: the LIFE ATENA project. Thanks to the collaboration of four companies (Antonio Carraro Spa, Ecothea Srl, Consorzio tutela del vino Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco and ERO GmbH) and co-financing from the European Union, two new compact full-hybrid and full-electric vineyard tractors are being developed which, using new specific equipment that is also electrified, they aim to reduce fuel consumption by 45% and lubricating oil consumption by 30%, thus significantly reducing the risk of oil dispersion into the environment during agricultural activity.

In addition to reducing the polluting gases emitted by the vehicle during operation in the field, the project aims to demonstrate, through an LCA study, how well the WTW emissions (Well To Wheel, i.e. the emissions produced during the entire life cycle of the product) , from the construction of the individual elements to disposal, passing through the use phase) are lower than those emitted by a traditional vehicle with traditional equipment.

After two years of work on the LIFE ATENA project, the first result of the initiative was unveiled at EIMA 2024. The project involved not only Antonio Carraro but also three exceptional partners: Ecothea (a startup from the Polytechnic University of Turin), ERO GmbH, and the Consorzio di Tutela Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG. The goal was to develop new technologies to improve the environmental impact of agricultural machinery.

A successor to the SRX Hybrid and eSP prototypes showcased at EIMA 2022, the SRe is a fully electric, compact, reversible, and articulated isodiametric tractor. Equipped with two motors—one delivering 68 horsepower (50 kilowatts) for mechanical transmission and another with 48 horsepower (35 kilowatts) for managing the power take-off and auxiliary functions—the SRe is powered by a 38-kilowatt-hour battery pack with a voltage of 400 volts. It can be recharged via the standard power grid or at a charging station with a Type 2 connection.
